PAB were asked to develop a scheme for the conversion and conservation of the original property’s structure, and to remodel the interior to create contemporary living spaces with modern kitchen and bathroom/shower areas for decades to come.
Refurbishment of a Beautiful Building
The property has been completely taken back to bare wall structure and externally re-roofed to provide an additional attic-style conversion, creating additional bedrooms and a bathroom within the second floor roof space.
An old conservatory has been removed and replaced with a more traditional orangery/garden room, our specification for which used only time-honoured materials and period detailing, including Lakeland stone walling to represent the property’s northern England heritage whilst offering a contemporary style to this newly extended section of the side elevation.
Traditional timber sliding sash windows have been newly fabricated using copies of the original timber window mouldings to produce authentic and incredibly accurate replica new windows, exceeding Historic England and English Heritage design standards and ensuring the building’s historic appeal is maintained.
Internally, the original grand staircase has been preserved throughout construction works and will be restored back to its original condition as part of the interior design specification. Plaster covings and ceiling features have been plaster cast and replicated to match the original down to the smallest detail.
Commitment to Environmental, Visual, Aesthetic & Innovative Ideas
The gardens, lawn and ornamental pond continue to undergo restoration and development, and a native evergreen oak tree has been planted ‘semi mature’ as a focal point, commemorating the renaissance of this delightful property.
PAB Architects and our client were both aligned that the property should be restored to the aesthetic grandeur of its heyday both internally and externally, whilst offering contemporary accommodation that secured the property’s long-term future and appealed to modern families.
Avoiding demolition and new-build construction, and using modern, energy-efficient materials wherever possible including new glazing and central heating systems, the environmental ethos behind the project has achieved a restoration that minimises carbon footprint both during construction and once the home is occupied.
Meanwhile, the property once again makes a positive impact visually in its local environment, restoring and enhancing features which maintains its position as a desirable residence and a beautiful building.
